Low energy lamps such as these use approximately one fifth of the energy used by a standard GLS tungsten filament light bulb to produce the same amount of light. This means that the consumer pays less for electricity to light their home or workplace, and that less electricity has to be generated thereby reducing the harmful polluting effects of electricity generation on the environment.

15W low energy lamps produce the equivalent amount of light (in lumens) as 75W standard GLS light bulbs. 20W low energy lamps produce the equivalent amount of light as 100W standard GLS light bulbs.

These lamps can only be fitted into 3 pin BC J-slot cap fittings, these are available through Ethical Products Direct. The cost and effort of replacing or adapting your light fittings is minimal. Ethical Products Direct have calculated that the average British home can reduce it's electricity bill by £60 - £70 per year by fitting low energy lamps throughout. It is also good safety practice to replace lampholders and other light fittings from time to time. It is also important to note that changing your lampholders and fittings, in the majority of cases, does not mean you have to change your lampshades and decorations etc.
